Balloon decor and event styling in Milton Keynes

Milton Keynes is the biggest room we work in, in every sense. The houses are newer and larger, the function spaces are bigger, and the grid means getting a van to your door is genuinely easier here than in most of the towns we cover.

Big modern houses change what a display has to do

Most of the newer MK estates share a shape: a double height hallway, an open plan kitchen diner across the back, and bifold doors onto the garden. It is a generous amount of space and it is the reason light up numbers get hired here more than almost anywhere else we work. There is room to stand back from them.

The catch is that open plan rooms have very few clear walls. A backdrop that would sit happily against a Victorian chimney breast has nowhere to go, so the display often ends up freestanding in the room, or working with the staircase and the doors rather than against a wall.

Double height hallways are the other MK speciality. A garland that climbs a stairwell is a piece of work most houses cannot take, and it is worth doing when the house can.

Two different Milton Keynes

The grid squares are one half. The other is the old towns the new city grew around, and they behave completely differently. Stony Stratford, Newport Pagnell, Olney and Woburn Sands have period buildings, coaching inns and village halls with all the constraints that come with them: low beams, listed walls you cannot fix anything to, and a car park that is a walk from the door.

It matters at the quoting stage rather than the styling stage. A garland going into a Grade II listed function room needs a different fixing plan from one going into a modern hotel suite, and it is far cheaper to find that out before the day than on it.

Corporate and retail work is the third strand here. Central Milton Keynes has the shopping centre and the office parks, and those installs are usually done before opening or after closing.

Where events happen in Milton Keynes

Some of the places people book across MK and the old towns around it. Listed as local context, not as a claim that we have worked at each one.

  • Chicheley Hall

A Grade I listed country house near Newport Pagnell, set in around eighty acres.

  • The Safari Lodge, Woburn Safari Park

A wooden lodge and veranda, licensed for ceremonies.

  • Mercure Milton Keynes Abbey Hill

A modern hotel close to central Milton Keynes.

  • Village and community halls

Olney, Woburn Sands, Stony Stratford and Newport Pagnell all have halls used for family parties.

Tell us the venue when you get in touch. We will check their access times and their rules on fixings before quoting, rather than after.

Getting a van to the door is easier here, and that matters

Milton Keynes was laid out for vehicles in a way the other towns on this list were not. Wide grid roads, generous estate parking and driveways that take more than one car. For a business that arrives with large freestanding letters and a van full of frames, that is a practical advantage rather than a design observation.

It shows up in what we can commit to. The pieces most likely to be refused elsewhere on access grounds, the tall letters and the bigger backdrops, are usually straightforward here, and the build itself takes less time when nothing has to be carried a hundred yards from a shared bay.

The exceptions are the older centres and the flats. Stony Stratford and Newport Pagnell have narrow streets and restricted loading, and apartment blocks anywhere in MK mean a lift and a booking with the building manager. Both are workable, they just want mentioning at the enquiry rather than discovering on the day.

What to send us if you are in Milton Keynes

MK jobs are usually bigger, so a couple of details up front change the quote quite a lot.

  • A photograph of the room, and of the hallway if letters are going in
  • Whether it is open plan, and where the clear space is
  • Ceiling height if you want anything tall, and a stairwell photo if it climbs
  • Parking: driveway, allocated bay or on street
  • If it is a flat, which floor and whether there is a lift
  • The date and the time guests arrive

Questions

Asked often

Do you cover the whole of Milton Keynes?

Yes, across MK1 to MK19, including Bletchley, Wolverton, Stony Stratford, Newport Pagnell, Woburn Sands, Olney and the grid square estates in between.

Can you build a garland up a double height stairwell?

Yes, and MK is where we get asked for it most, because the houses are built for it. Send a photograph of the hallway so we can see the drop and the banister before quoting.

My kitchen diner has no clear wall. Can you still do a backdrop?

Yes. Freestanding backdrops do not need a wall behind them, which is exactly why they suit open plan rooms. It is a very common brief on the newer estates.

Do you work in the older towns as well as the grid?

Yes. Stony Stratford, Newport Pagnell, Olney and Woburn Sands are all covered. Period venues have tighter rules on fixings, so tell us which one and we will check with them.

Can you deliver light up numbers to Milton Keynes?

Yes. They are delivered, positioned and set up before guests arrive, then collected after the event. You are not carrying or returning anything.

Can you style an event at an MK hotel?

Yes. Hotels usually give you the room at a set time and want it clear by another, so tell us both and we will build the set up and collection around them.

Do you cover Olney and Woburn Sands?

Yes, along with Stony Stratford, Newport Pagnell and Bletchley. The older centres have tighter access, so mention parking when you get in touch.
